Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to provide you my feedback regarding the cookery course.

Last 3 months, I have learned several cuisines from your course that I am struggling with. Since completing the course, I cook 3 times in a day which enhances my culinary skill.

I would like to appreciate the efforts you have made on us. Because of this course, I was able to complete my dream of becoming a great cook.

No doubt, this course assisted me getting perfection in north Indian food, i would like to add my suggestion regarding a different course. If we add international dishes in this course, the more and more pupils from distinct states will be able to join your school.

At last. I would like to show my gratitude by thanking you for your hardworking and guidance during this course. I truly appreciate the dedications of teachers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing enjoyment, mentioning cooking frequency, and suggesting a new course. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the development of ideas. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening 'Dear sir' is slightly informal compared to the required 'Dear Sir or Madam'. The ideas are relevant but could be expanded further to fully meet the task requirements. Because the word count is below the threshold, the score is limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'At last' are used to signal the conclusion, but the transition between ideas within paragraphs is occasionally abrupt. The logical flow is present, but the lack of sophisticated linking words prevents a higher score. The paragraphing is functional, but the overall progression could be smoother with more varied cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases such as 'great cook' and 'hardworking' are quite basic. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'assisted me getting' instead of 'assisted me in getting' and 'dedications' (pluralization error). While the meaning is clear throughout, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated lexical items to enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist, such as 'I cook 3 times in a day' (should be 'three times a day') and 'Last 3 months, I have learned' (incorrect tense usage). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of full stops where commas would be more appropriate, such as 'At last. I would like...'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score.
