Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you that, I have recently done a cookery course from your school. Before taking this course I was very bad at cooking. But now I am the best cook in my friend circle.

In that course I learned to cook different kind of dishes as well as learned various type of recipes I enjoyed the atmosphere of the school. The teachers over there ware very friendly and kind. They taught me in very simple way.

Since I have done my course, I prepare meals for myself as well as for my parents sometimes. I am in love with cooking. Last week I invited my friends on dinner. They liked my cooking so much that they are also considering to take cooking course. Even i was thinking to rejoin the school to learn some new recipes.

So I want to suggest you to offer another cookery course this summer, which me and my friends can join.

Thank you

Best regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described what you enjoyed (the atmosphere and friendly teachers), explained how much you have been cooking since the course, and suggested a new course for the summer. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a course director. To improve, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, when mentioning the 'different kind of dishes', you could briefly specify a cuisine or technique to add more substance to your response. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In that course', 'Since I have done my course', and 'So'. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to avoid a slightly repetitive sentence structure. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect your experience with the subsequent suggestion for a new course.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'considering', 'atmosphere', and 'recipes'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'done a cookery course' (better: 'completed' or 'taken') and 'invited my friends on dinner' (better: 'invited my friends to dinner'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly, it remains somewhat basic. Incorporating more precise verbs and descriptive adjectives would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have recently done a cookery course from your school' (better: 'at your school'), 'ware' (spelling error for 'were'), and 'Even i was thinking' (capitalization error). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma after 'that' in the first paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will improve your accuracy.
