Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir / Madam

I am writing to give feedback about the cookery course I recently attended.

I really enjoyed the course because the teacher was friendly and explained everything clearly. I also enjoyed making new dishes and learning new cooking skills. The classes were interesting and easy to follow.

Since the course finished, I have cooked several times at home. I have made couple of items such as, pasta, pizza and soup for my family. I feel more confident while cooking now, and I follow the recipes more easily.

I would like to suggest baking course in the future. It will be great to learn how to make cakes, cookies, and other dessert. I think that this course will be useful for many students those who have interest in baking.

Thank you for providing such a useful and amazing course. I look forward to attending another course in the future.

Yours faithfully,

Dhruv Kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe what you enjoyed about the course, provide a brief update on your cooking activities since the course, and offer a relevant suggestion for a future baking course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why' behind your enjoyment or provide more specific details about the dishes you have cooked to demonstrate a more developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear structure. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point from the prompt, which aids readability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I also enjoyed', 'Since the course finished', and 'In the future' to link your ideas. While the flow is logical, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat simple. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to create a more sophisticated flow between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use topic-specific terms like 'cookery course', 'recipes', and 'baking'. However, there are some minor errors, such as 'made couple of items' (missing an article: 'a couple of') and 'those who have interest' (slightly awkward phrasing). To achieve a higher score, try to use more precise collocations and a slightly wider range of descriptive language to express your enthusiasm for the course.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good control of basic sentence structures, and your meaning is always clear. You successfully use a mix of simple and compound sentences. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'suggest baking course' (missing an article: 'a baking course') and 'other dessert' (should be plural: 'other desserts'). While your grammar is generally accurate, the range of complex structures is limited. Incorporating more varied sentence patterns, such as relative clauses or conditional structures, would help elevate your score.
