Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing this letter to express my experience of this wonderful cookery course at your school.

Firstly, I would say that the course felt like me very entertaining and exciting to me throughout my period. Additionally, I enjoyed cooking with a great teacher and friendly classmates.

Normally, I am very poor at cooking, and mostly, I order food from restaurants and hotels. But now, I have become very independent by cooking various cuisines at home. Whatever I learned in class, I have tried at home and served it to my friends and family.

Definitely, I would recommend that the school start a new program for cookery courses for youngsters regularly intakes and more enrolments; even my friends are interested to learn this courses.

I hope you will consider my valuable feedback, and I am eagerly waiting to another course with different cuisines from all around the world.

Kind regards,

Harshil Trivedi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described what you enjoyed, explained your cooking habits since the course, and suggested a new program. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a course director. However, the suggestion for the new course is slightly unclear; phrases like 'youngsters regularly intakes' are grammatically confusing, making it difficult to fully understand your specific recommendation. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are expressed with greater clarity and precision, particularly when proposing new initiatives.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'But now' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally easy to follow, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the overall progression could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly rather than relying on simple, repetitive connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message effectively. You use some good descriptive phrases like 'wonderful cookery course' and 'various cuisines'. However, there are some awkward word choices and minor errors, such as 'youngsters regularly intakes' and 'learn this courses' (should be 'these courses'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your word forms (singular/plural) are accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use some complex sentences, there are several grammatical slips throughout the text. For example, 'the course felt like me very entertaining and exciting to me' is awkward and contains redundant pronouns. Additionally, 'I am eagerly waiting to another course' should be 'waiting for another course'. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely cause confusion for the reader. To achieve a higher score, focus on refining your sentence construction and proofreading for small prepositional and structural errors.
