Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter regarding my recent cookery course which I completed last month. I am very keen of learning new cooking recipes. So I enrolled in cooking course at your school. My teacher was Balwinder Singh and he taught me different methods of cooking and kitchen tool usage. I enjoyed a lot during the classes and other students were also very friendly.
Nowadays, I cook everyday for me and my sister and I use the recipe book which school provided me during course completion day. Last Sunday I cooked Paneer butter with milk recipe and it was very tasty. My family and friends praised me a lot about my cooking skills.
I would like to request you to offer a course regarding bakery products which school should start in next summer. I will look forward to your response regarding my suggestion.
Thank you
Your faithfully,
Lovepreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing what was enjoyed, detailing recent cooking practice, and suggesting a new course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the description of what was enjoyed is limited to mentioning the teacher and friendly classmates without elaborating on specific skills or moments. Similarly, the suggestion for a bakery course is brief. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detail and depth to your points, such as explaining why a bakery course would be beneficial or describing a specific technique you learned that you now use frequently.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the first and second paragraph is abrupt. You rely heavily on simple sentence structures and basic conjunctions like 'and' or 'so'. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', or 'In addition to this', which would help the letter flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You use basic terms like 'very keen', 'very friendly', and 'very tasty', which are repetitive. There are also some minor collocation errors, such as 'I enjoyed a lot during the classes' (should be 'I enjoyed the classes a lot') and 'Paneer butter with milk recipe' (which sounds unnatural). To improve, aim to use more specific adjectives and precise collocations. For example, instead of 'very tasty', you could use 'delicious' or 'flavorful'. Expanding your range of vocabulary will help you express your ideas with more sophistication and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that, while they do not impede communication, are noticeable. For example, 'I am very keen of learning' should be 'I am very keen on learning'. 'I cook everyday for me and my sister' should be 'I cook every day for myself and my sister'. Additionally, there are errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'enrolled in cooking course' (should be 'a cooking course') and 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). Increasing your control over basic grammar and proofreading for small errors would significantly improve your score.
