Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am glad to provide my feedback on the basic beginner's cookery course I attended at your cookery school last month.
To begin with, I must say it was a rewarding experience which upgraded my cooking skills to next level. I not only enjoyed the in-depth knowledge given during the course, but also enjoyed the group participation sessions which assisted students' to practice teamwork and learn from each other's mistakes.
As my husband is a gourmand personality, I have been cooking scrumptious dishes for him almost every day since I finished the course. He is extremely proud of me and even told his friends about my innovative cooking techniques.
I suggest you introducing another course on 'Baked Deserts' which will assist students to learn basic baking skills while mastering desert preparations. It will satisfy the sweet tooth of those who crave deserts.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my experience, and I hope I get to enroll again in a new course.
Kinds regards,
Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the benefits of the course, such as the group participation sessions, and provide a relevant update on your cooking frequency. The suggestion for a 'Baked Deserts' course is also well-integrated. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could have elaborated on specific techniques learned to add more depth to your experience description.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'As', and 'In addition' (implied) effectively to link your sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve further, ensure that the transition between your personal experience and the suggestion for the new course is slightly smoother to enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'rewarding experience', 'in-depth knowledge', and 'scrumptious'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'gourmand personality' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and the spelling error 'deserts' instead of 'desserts'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the highest bands. Using more precise collocations would elevate your writing significantly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'I not only enjoyed... but also enjoyed...' is a good use of correlative conjunctions. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as the unnecessary apostrophe in 'students'' and the phrasing 'I suggest you introducing', which should be 'I suggest that you introduce' or 'I suggest introducing'. Despite these, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good.
