Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to give my feedback on the six months cookery course that I have just completed last week with good scores from your cookery school.

The most enjoyable part of the course was the team work. Our teachers used to give use a task every week that should have covered an event cooking. . Apart from this, site visiting to different restauntans was an another memorable experince.

Since I have finished my course, I am cooking on daily basic at home and sometimes I go to help my uncle in his restraunt also.

After thinking for a long time, particulartly I would suggest you to add a pastry couse in your school as the demand of french sweets is increasing in our country day by day. I hope this suggestion will help your to meet the true goals of your institute.

I wish you luck and write me back if you like my suggestion.

Yours faithfully,

Harpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: you described the enjoyable aspects (teamwork and site visits), mentioned your current cooking habits, and suggested a new pastry course. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a course director. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention teamwork, you could have elaborated on why it was enjoyable or what specific skills you gained. The letter is clear and the purpose is well-defined, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing for each point. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'Since I have finished', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'that should have covered an event cooking', which is slightly unclear. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter is organised in a way that is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'memorable experience' and 'institute'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'restauntans' (restaurants), 'experince' (experience), 'particulartly' (particularly), and 'couse' (course). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, you should focus on more precise word choices and ensure accurate spelling of common terms related to the topic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'cooking on daily basic' (should be 'daily basis'), 'site visiting' (should be 'site visits'), and 'help my uncle in his restraunt also' (awkward phrasing). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and tense errors, such as 'I am writing to give my feedback on the six months cookery course that I have just completed last week'. Despite these errors, the communication remains effective throughout the letter.
