Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing you this letter regarding the feedback for my cookery course i did in your school.

To begin with, i would really appreciate teachers efforts and knowledge as i really enjoyed studying this course at your school. Because of your efforts and friendly teaching it was made easy for me to learn this course. In addition to the teachers efforts, I would like to praise about the infrasturcture too.

Furthermore, ever since i have done this italian and indian cooking course my cooking skills have improved alot and all my friends and relatives have been asking for my receipes and new dishes.

In the last i want to say that, it would be great, If you guys can also start the online cooking classes, as alot of my friends from around the world would like to learn this course too.

I am looking forward for your response.

Yours sincerely,

Mohit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing what was enjoyed, mentioning the frequency of cooking since the course, and suggesting a new course. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a course director, though it leans slightly informal. The ideas are relevant, but they are somewhat underdeveloped. For instance, while you mention enjoying the teachers' efforts and the infrastructure, providing a specific example of a dish or a particular teaching technique would have made the response more engaging and fully developed. Overall, the task is addressed clearly and effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition to', 'Furthermore', and 'In the last' to transition between ideas. While these are functional, the flow is occasionally a bit mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the structure of the final paragraph could be improved for better flow. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'cookery course', 'infrastructure', and 'recipes'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'infrasturcture' and 'receipes', and some minor word choice issues, such as 'praise about' (should be 'praise the') and 'learn this course' (should be 'take this course'). To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent minor grammatical errors, such as the inconsistent capitalization of 'i', missing articles (e.g., 'in your school' instead of 'at your school'), and punctuation issues. The phrase 'I am writing you this letter' is slightly awkward; 'I am writing to you regarding' would be more natural. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will significantly improve your writing.
