Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I would like to express a feedback about the cookery course that I recently completed in your school. I like teaching style and practical sessions but facility of recorded sessions is the most useful for daily cooking at home.
When I start the course, I was unable to cook any kind of food but now I am able to make a complete Indian meals including variety of curries and Naans. My family members like Mint Naan which I usually cooked by following the recipe you have shared. However, I also cooked Italian food including pasta and Pizza.
Currently I feel I lack in bakery skills as I am not able to make any dessert items such as cupcake. I would like to join your dessert expert course. The most attractive part in that course outline is sugar-free deserts recipes.
I have tried to cook desserts, but I was not able to make it so far. Because of this, I am planning to join Dessert Express course next month. This course also has a option for sugar-free dessert which is most appealing part for me.
I hope my feedback can give meaningful insight for your schools.
Yours faithfully,
Yash

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing what you enjoyed, detailing your cooking progress, and suggesting a new course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, you mention your interest in a dessert course twice in separate paragraphs, which makes the letter feel slightly circular. To improve, ensure each paragraph introduces a distinct point without repeating information already provided. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Currently', to transition between ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some referencing is slightly unclear (e.g., 'the facility of recorded sessions'). The repetition of the dessert course suggestion in the third and fourth paragraphs disrupts the logical progression of the letter. Using a wider variety of linking words and avoiding redundant information would improve the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'practical sessions', 'meaningful insight', and 'appealing'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'express a feedback' (should be 'give feedback') and 'facility of recorded sessions' (should be 'availability of recorded sessions'). You also have some spelling errors, such as 'deserts' instead of 'desserts'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage and careful proofreading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'When I start the course' (should be 'When I started'), 'I am able to make a complete Indian meals' (should be 'an Indian meal' or 'Indian meals'), and 'I usually cooked' (should be 'I usually cook'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While your meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
