Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide my feedback on the short-term cookery course which I recently completed from your institution.

To begin with, I registered in a beginner course which is a combination of practical and theoretical sessions. I really enjoyed this course because of the interactive sessions with the colleagues and master chef’s. Additionally, I liked the course structure as it covers various cuisines and cooking styles at a beginner level.

Since then, whenever it is possible I am cooking my own food by adding appropriate ingredients. Last night, I cooked Chicken Biryani which is made with raw meat, marinated with the authentic south Indian spIces. It almost took an hour as it involves steaming process.

In the near future, I would request that you consider adding some more courses on cooking especially on vintage Indian dishes. In addition to that, I kindly request that you include some more practical session to provide better hands-on experience.

I hope you consider my request and include some courses in the future. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Raj kumar Pratap

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described what you enjoyed (interactive sessions and course structure), mentioned your cooking frequency, and suggested a new course topic (vintage Indian dishes). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, explaining why the 'vintage' aspect of the dishes interests you would add more depth to your suggestion. Overall, the response is clear, relevant, and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a polite closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'In the near future' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The progression of information is smooth, and the letter follows a standard formal structure. To improve, you could vary your linking phrases slightly more to avoid a somewhat mechanical feel, but the current structure is effective and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'theoretical sessions', 'interactive', and 'authentic'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'registered in' (should be 'registered for') and 'colleagues' (in a cookery course, 'classmates' or 'fellow students' is more natural). The use of 'master chef’s' contains an unnecessary apostrophe. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or less common lexical items would help elevate the score to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'whenever it is possible I am cooking' (should be 'whenever possible, I cook') and 'include some more practical session' (should be 'sessions'). The sentence 'Last night, I cooked Chicken Biryani which is made with raw meat, marinated with the authentic south Indian spIces' is slightly clunky due to the punctuation and phrasing. However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and pluralization, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy.
