Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for reaching out to me for my feedback on cookery course C-125. I am glad that I took this course because some of my friends who took another course were not taught Chinese cuisine. Learning to make dumplings was the most interesting part of the course to me.

After completion of the course, I opened my own fast-food restaurant at the town. My restaurant serves Bhutanese, Indian and Chinese cuisine, and also provide deliveries during business hours. Being the head chef of my restaurant, and have been continuously cooking most of the items. I mostly enjoy cooking Chinese cuisines, such as dumplings, chowmin and bathups.

The knowledge gained from the course is helping me a lot in cooking the items in my restaurant. The school does not have any courses that covers different types of breakfast items using eggs although sandwiches are covered. I believe that with this new course, students will be able to equip themselves with western-style food items which will increase the chance of their employment. I hope my feedback will be helpful in designing new courses for future students.

Sincerely,

Limx

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your enjoyment of the dumpling-making section, explained your current cooking frequency in your restaurant, and suggested a new course focused on egg-based breakfast items. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are more fully developed; for instance, you could have elaborated slightly more on why the egg-based course would be beneficial for the school's curriculum beyond just employment prospects. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'After completion of the course' and 'The knowledge gained from the course', to link your sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cuisine', 'deliveries', and 'employment'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'at the town' (should be 'in the town') and 'chowmin' (spelling: 'chow mein'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific terminology related to professional cooking or educational feedback to demonstrate a broader lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'and have been continuously cooking' lacks a clear subject, and 'the school does not have any courses that covers' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('courses that cover'). Additionally, 'at the town' is an incorrect preposition. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
