Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
My name is Avyakt Sethi and recently I did a short cookery course from your school. I enjoyed every moment of this course as I was able to learn variety of skills of cooking which will help me pursue my dream of being a good chef in future that will help me lot in opening my own hotel.
I just love to cook so I have been cooking everyday since the day classes finished. I am trying to perfect me in almost every type of food from different parts of world such as Chinese, Thai , American , Indian etc. All this will help me in becoming a good chef who can cook almost every type of dishes.
One thing I want to suggest is that can you please start giving a short cookery course on specially Indian food, it is because it has so vast variety of different food from vegetarian to non-vegetarian. Also make sure you give training on how to make food on coal and also on the tandoor oven as it’s taste is different when cooked on these.
It was great learning from you and I hope you will consider my request to start a new course in future.
Yours Faithfully,
Avyakt Sethi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe your enjoyment of the course, state your current cooking frequency, and provide a specific suggestion for a new course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention wanting to be a chef, expanding slightly on how the course specifically helped you achieve this would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task requirements are fully met with a clear and relevant focus throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'also' and 'as', but the flow could be improved by using a wider range of linking words and transition phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. For example, the transition between your cooking habits and your suggestion for a new course is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics, which helps the reader navigate the letter easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pursue', 'perfect', and 'vegetarian'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'perfect me' (instead of 'perfect my skills') and 'it’s taste is different' (where 'its' should be possessive without an apostrophe). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to cooking and professional development to make your writing sound more natural and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I did a short cookery course from your school' (should be 'at'), 'variety of skills of cooking' (should be 'cooking skills'), and 'in future' (should be 'in the future'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as unnecessary spaces before commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and prepositional phrases will help improve your accuracy.
