Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir/ madam,
I am writing this letter to provide my feedback on the short cookery course I recently done in your school. It was a six months course, which gained my interest in cooking.
The thing which I enjoyed most in this course is that it was not only recipies to learn, but it had videos about how to cook food properly. These videos make this course more interesting. After taking this course I have cooked so much food for my kith and keens. I also start helping my mom in the kitchen and sometime I make a food with the cooking techniques I learnt from this course.
This was the course which youngsters need to be choose for basic cooking in their daily life. But I would like to suggest the course which should have teach the professional cooking skills. Therefore, the people who want to be chefs in their future, it would be easy for them becuase they will learn professional cooking in the school.
Yours sincerely,
Amanpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing what you enjoyed, mentioning your cooking frequency since the course, and suggesting a new course. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a course director. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention enjoying the videos, you could have elaborated more on how they specifically helped your technique. Similarly, your suggestion for a professional course is clear, but the explanation of why this would be beneficial is slightly repetitive. To improve, ensure that each point is fully expanded with specific details or examples to demonstrate a more thorough engagement with the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required points. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'After taking this course' and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the shift from discussing your personal cooking to suggesting a new course could be smoother. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more clearly signposted to guide the reader through your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'techniques' and 'professional cooking skills'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'kith and keens' is an incorrect idiom; the standard phrase is 'kith and kin', though it is quite archaic and less suitable here than 'friends and family'. Additionally, 'make a food' is unnatural; 'prepare meals' or 'cook' would be more appropriate. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and avoid using idioms unless you are certain of their correct form and modern usage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'I recently done' (should be 'I recently did' or 'I have recently done'), 'youngsters need to be choose' (should be 'need to choose'), and 'should have teach' (should be 'should teach'). These errors in verb tense and modal usage are noticeable. While your meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these slips prevents a higher score. Focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and the correct formation of passive and active voice constructions.
