Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have recently completed my cookery course from your cookery school. Firstly, i would like to thank you for giving this opportunity to give my feedback on this course. I have genuinely enjoyed the whole course, it has helped me a lot in my daily life and also at my workplace. Among all part of this course, I enjoyed the practical part where we, students, were given some tasks to complete. Since the day one of this course, I have cooked the food daily to learn more. I would like to suggest some more classes for only cooking, which will increase the interest of the students. Overall, this course had helped me more than anything to setting up my career as a baker on my own and open my own bakery. I would also appreciate the trainers, because of their calmness, willingness to help trainees, handling situations with patience.

Yours Sincerely,

Harshdeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe what you enjoyed (the practical tasks), mention your cooking frequency since the course, and suggest a new course. However, the suggestion for a new course is somewhat vague; you mention 'some more classes for only cooking' without specifying a particular topic or style, which limits the development of your ideas. To reach a higher band, ensure that your suggestions are specific and well-explained. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Among all part of this course', and 'Overall' to guide the reader. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is presented as a single block of text. To improve, you should use separate paragraphs for each of the three bullet points requested in the prompt. This would significantly enhance the structure and readability of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'opportunity', 'practical', and 'patience'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Among all part of this course' (should be 'parts') and 'setting up my career... on my own' (which is slightly redundant). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, the overall range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing to show greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'i would like' (the pronoun 'I' must always be capitalized), 'this course had helped me' (should be 'has helped'), and 'to setting up' (should be 'to set up'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as comma splices in the sentence 'I have genuinely enjoyed the whole course, it has helped me...'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
