Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to give you my personal feedback about the recent cookery course that I did in your school two weeks ago.

I am interested in cooking so much, and I wanted to improve my skills in it. So, I decided to join your course which I learnt a lot of things from you. I enjoyed preparing the dough of the Italian pizza. The chef there was so helpful and kind, and I aquired a lot of information from him.

Whenever I finished the daily course and returning back to home. I often tried to cook the same recipe and ask my family to give their opinions. I was really happy by the results.

I also like to bake bread and cookies. I would appreciated if you can organise another course about baking, I will be satisfied and the first one to join the course.

Kind regards,

Samah

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe your enjoyment of the pizza dough preparation, explain your post-course practice, and suggest a baking course. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a course director. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the suggestion for a new course could be expanded by explaining why you are interested in baking specifically or what skills you hope to gain. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and closing. Each paragraph addresses a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'So', 'Whenever', and 'I also', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by separating the suggestion for the new course into its own distinct paragraph to enhance readability. The referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the letter is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'personal feedback', 'preparing the dough', and 'organise'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'aquired' (spelling: acquired) and 'I am interested in cooking so much' (awkward phrasing). While you successfully communicate your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the variety or precision that would elevate the score to a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more specific adjectives and varied verbs to describe your experiences and feelings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'Whenever I finished the daily course and returning back to home' is a sentence fragment and contains a tense error. Additionally, 'I would appreciated' should be 'I would appreciate'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that every sentence has a clear main verb will help improve your accuracy.
