Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing to explain my experience regarding cookery courses. Last month, I finished my cookery course from your school. I get more theory and practical knowledge from this class.

Firstly, I really enjoyed this class because tutor and other students are very friendly and flexible. Apart from that , the teaching method was very excellent. We are getting more knowledge from the tutor. He is a good communicator as well.

In my session, I prepared more than 25 items myself. I felt very proud. Moreover, practiced more than 3 time per 1 dishes. It’s very helpful for memorizing the recipe.

Finally, I am very interested to involve the cooking in home. All the family members are appreciating my dishes. If you are plan to do another session, please let me know. I will inform my friends as well..

Thank you for your support and hide. I am looking forward your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Kavi.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing what was enjoyed, mentioning cooking frequency since the course, and suggesting a new course. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion for a new course is vague ('If you are plan to do another session, please let me know'), failing to specify a particular type of cuisine or skill level as requested. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter, though the closing 'hide' is unclear and likely a misuse of vocabulary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Apart from that', and 'Moreover'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between the description of the course and the suggestion for future classes feels a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved for better cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of awkward word choice, such as 'I get more theory' instead of 'I gained theoretical knowledge' and 'involve the cooking in home' instead of 'incorporate cooking at home'. The phrase 'hide' at the end is a significant error that impedes meaning. While the student can communicate basic ideas, the range is limited, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, such as 'tutor and other students are' (should be 'were') and 'practiced more than 3 time' (should be 'times'). The sentence 'If you are plan to do another session' contains a clear error in structure. While these errors do not completely prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and detract from the overall quality of the writing.
