Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to share my positive feedback of the cookery class i attended recently at your school.

Firstly, I want to appreciate for all the efforts made by our teachers and Chefs, they made this experience commendable. I personally loved everything which was taught, especially the continental food.

Ever since graduation, i am working at one of the luxurious restaurant in Toronto downtown named Adrak originally Indian based. My journey after school have been challenging, I am able to gain hands on experience of a different cuisine. I have gone through our study material multiple times, to verify the allergies and it's alternatives.

If i have to suggest any change, I would say you should introduce more practical labs, rather than theory as a result student will end up having more experience in culinary industry. I strongly believe, school can offer internships which can help the students to master their skills effectively.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Jacob

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your enjoyment of the continental food, explained your current professional situation in a restaurant, and provided a clear suggestion for practical labs and internships. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. However, the development of your ideas could be slightly more detailed to fully explore the 'why' behind your suggestions. For instance, explaining how internships would specifically benefit the school's reputation would strengthen the response. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Ever since', and 'If I have to suggest'. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences are slightly abrupt, such as the shift from your graduation to your current job. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'it's alternatives') is grammatically precise to avoid ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'commendable', 'continental food', and 'culinary industry'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'appreciate for all the efforts' (should be 'appreciate all the efforts') and 'it's alternatives' (should be 'its alternatives'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and possessives. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated collocations related to professional feedback would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several recurring grammatical errors, such as the inconsistent capitalization of 'i' (e.g., 'i attended', 'i am working'), subject-verb agreement issues ('My journey... have been'), and punctuation errors (comma splices in the second and third paragraphs). While your meaning is always clear, these frequent minor errors prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and consistent pronoun capitalization will significantly improve your accuracy.
