Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to provide feedback on the short cookery course that I recently completed at your school.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed the course. The instructor were knowledgeable, friendly and always willing to answer questions. I particularly appreciated practical sessions, where we prepared variety of dishes under professional guidance. The recipe was easy to follow, and small size class allowed everyone to receive individual attention.

Since, completing the course, I have been cooking much more frequently than before. I now prepare my meal at home and regularly use techniques I learned during the classes. In fact, I have sucessfully cooked some dishes from course for my friends and family, who are very impress with the results.

As a suggestion, I would be interested in seeing the school offer a course on international cuisine. Many people enjoy trying food from different cultures. Course covering dishes from Italy, Mexico and Thailand would be both enjoyable and educational. I believe it would attract former and new students.

Thank you for giving me opportunity to provide feedback, I look forward to join school again for an another course.

Yours faithfully,

Neel Mistry.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your enjoyment of the course, explained your cooking habits since completing it, and provided a clear suggestion for a future course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the task requirements. The letter follows the requested structure and maintains a consistent focus throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor grammatical slips do not detract from the clarity of your ideas, though your response is already quite effective in meeting the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate your ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Since completing', 'In fact', and 'As a suggestion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. The progression of ideas is clear, and the relationship between sentences is easy to follow. The letter flows well, and the use of a formal opening and closing is appropriate for the context. The structure is sound and supports the overall message effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use terms like 'professional guidance', 'individual attention', and 'international cuisine' correctly. However, there are some minor errors in word form and spelling, such as 'sucessfully' (successfully) and 'impress' (impressed). Additionally, 'prepared variety of dishes' is missing an article ('a variety'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the highest bands. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would further enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The instructor were' (subject-verb agreement), 'Since, completing' (unnecessary comma), and 'I look forward to join' (should be 'joining'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. You have attempted some complex structures, which is positive, but you need to focus on accuracy in verb forms and prepositions to improve your score. Most sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors keeps the score in the mid-range.
