You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter
- describe what you enjoyed about the course
- say how much cooking you've done since the course
- suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you about my experience of cookery course which i did last year. The thing which i have liked a lot was the way of teaching. They have 3 levels of teaching for example, firstly they provide theoretical knowledge then by recorded video and lastly practical learning. The instructors were highly knowledgeable as well.
Moreover, after this course I have learnt to make so many dishes. I have done a few catering orders as well for my relatives, and they all liked my food. Apart from that, I did participate in a cooking show called MasterChef, and I won that show and came at 1st place.
I would like to make a request to the course director that if it is possible to add Mexican and Italian food courses, that would be a really helpful for the students as well as for the school. As these are the cuisines which are the most popular around the world.
I hope you will consider my feedback and will work on it.
Yours faithfully,
Vipal Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly describe the teaching methods you enjoyed, explain your post-course cooking activities, and offer a relevant suggestion for new courses. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. To improve, you could provide more specific detail regarding the 'theoretical knowledge' or 'practical learning' to better develop your ideas, as the current descriptions are somewhat brief. However, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Apart from that', and 'I would like to make a request' to guide the reader. While the progression is clear, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases would help improve the flow and make the connections between your ideas more sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'theoretical knowledge', 'catering orders', and 'cuisines'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'came at 1st place' instead of 'took first place' or 'won'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision or variety required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more specific collocations related to education or culinary arts to make your writing sound more natural and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical slips throughout the text. For example, 'the cookery course which i did' should be capitalized, and 'that would be a really helpful' contains an unnecessary article. Additionally, there are minor issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'the most popular around the world'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic errors like capitalization and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
