Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I attended your cookery course to learn basic skills in kitchen as I never learned how to cook before. I would like to provide my review of the service your team provided throughout the journey.

I am extremely emotional to say thank you to all the members of the team who helped me during my learning phase. During the sessions, all the chefs were patiently teaching basics to everyone but in my case it was little difficult as I have never been to kitchen. The staff taught me how to hold a knife and in 15 days of period I learned all the basic meal preparations. Since then, I have been helping my mother to prepare lunch and I cook the dinner by myself. I am so confident in kitchen nowadays and I learn new recipes from online platform. I would like to attend a class which can help me learn Italian food as my husband loves it. I am hoping to attend a cookery course that can help me with various cuisine.

I am hoping to get some details soon from you. Thank you for building so much confidence in me.

Sincerely,

Pan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your positive experience with the chefs, explained your current cooking habits, and suggested an Italian cuisine course. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a course director. To improve, ensure you develop your ideas slightly more; for instance, when mentioning your progress, you could briefly describe a specific dish you have mastered. The letter is well-structured and clearly communicates your purpose, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the experience, current status, and future suggestions. Paragraphing is used, though the body of the letter could be split into two distinct paragraphs to better separate the reflection on the course from the future suggestions. You use some cohesive devices like 'Since then' and 'During the sessions', but the flow could be improved with a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly. Overall, the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. Phrases like 'learning phase' and 'basic meal preparations' are relevant. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and unnatural collocations, such as '15 days of period' (should be 'a 15-day period') and 'I am extremely emotional to say thank you' (which sounds slightly unnatural in this context). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions related to cooking and learning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in kitchen' should be 'in the kitchen') and verb tenses ('I never learned how to cook' should be 'I had never learned'). There are also minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'online platform' (should be 'online platforms'). Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and you show a good attempt at using varied sentence forms.
