IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter
- describe what you enjoyed about the course
- say how much cooking you've done since the course
- suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I completed a cookery course from you school last month. I am writing you this letter providing my reviews as you asked me. I want to tell you that i had a great time with you guys. The environment at your school was amazing and I learned a lot things. The Best thing was our teacher Mr. Smith who made the cookery class very enjoyable and worth learning a lot. All the dishes that he taught me during the time period got stuck in my mind like never before. Additionally after that I started cooking food for my guest on my own rather than ordering from outside as this made me really confident that everyone would like it. Moreover I also cook food for my family twice a week now which I would have never done before.
I would suggest you to start teaching Italian cuisine also as many people would show interest in that as well. This would help you to attract new students who are not able to find a good cooking school in our area.
Yours truly
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the enjoyment of the course, specifically mentioning the instructor, Mr. Smith. You also explain your post-course cooking habits and provide a relevant suggestion for an Italian cuisine course. The tone is appropriate for a feedback letter, although it leans slightly informal with phrases like 'you guys'. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is more consistent; for instance, the explanation of how the course helped your confidence is good, but could be slightly more detailed to fully satisfy the 'well-developed' requirement of higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The paragraphing is functional, but the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the sentences within paragraphs are more tightly connected. Currently, the structure is clear, but the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'environment', 'cuisine', and 'confident'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'providing my reviews' (should be 'providing feedback') and 'got stuck in my mind' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). You also use 'a lot things' instead of 'a lot of things'. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and avoid informal conversational fillers.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'from you school' (should be 'from your school'), 'i had' (the pronoun 'I' must always be capitalized), and 'cooking food for my guest' (should be plural 'guests'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues throughout. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To achieve a higher band, you should focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and capitalization, and attempt to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
