Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide positive feedback regarding the cookery course I attended last month.
I enrolled in the two-week basic culinary course during August. The program catered effectively to individuals of varying skill levels and age groups. This inclusive environment not only allowed me to socialize with fellow participants, but also provided a wonderful opportunity to learn about their diverse backgrounds and interests. Throughout the course, I mastered fundamental techniques, such as managing oil temperatures during frying and properly balancing seasoning and spices.
Previously, I lacked confidence in my cooking abilities; however, I am now able to prepare meals for my friends and family with ease. It was immensely satisfying to watch them enjoy the dishes I created. Furthermore, I am keen to explore contemporary culinary styles, particularly techniques that blend traditional Indian flavors with international cuisine. Could you please let me know if the school offers any advanced or fusion cookery classes in the near future?
Thank you for providing such an enriching experience. looking forward to hearing from you
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the enjoyable aspects of the course, such as the inclusive environment and the specific techniques learned. You also clearly stated how much you have been cooking since the course, noting that you now prepare meals for friends and family. Finally, you made a relevant suggestion for an advanced or fusion cookery class. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the structure easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Furthermore', 'however', and 'not only... but also', to link your sentences and ideas smoothly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the transition between the feedback on the course and the request for future classes is natural. The overall flow of the letter is coherent and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a cookery course. Phrases like 'fundamental techniques', 'inclusive environment', and 'contemporary culinary styles' show a high level of lexical control. You use collocations accurately, such as 'balancing seasoning' and 'enriching experience'. While the vocabulary is precise and effective, it is consistently appropriate rather than highly sophisticated or idiomatic, which is perfectly suitable for this task. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or spelling that would impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You display a good command of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional-like structures and subordinate clauses ('This inclusive environment not only allowed me to socialize... but also provided...'). The grammar is generally accurate throughout the letter. There is a minor punctuation error at the end ('looking forward to hearing from you' lacks a capital letter and a closing punctuation mark), but this is a minor slip. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and aspect is consistent with the requirements of the task.
