Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Director,

I hope you are feeling well. I am writing to let you know that I really enjoyed your cookery course.

Firstly, I loved your teaching style. You explainedin details and with examples, which is very helpful for me. I enjoyed the moment when we celebrate fare-well with making signature dishes.

Secondly, I did a number of experiments with dishes since the course, such as Italian pasta and Mexican pizza with different styles. I really appreciate the teaching skills you have. I would definitely recommend your cookery classes to other people and also post a good review on social media because your classes give me a number of opportunities in the food industry field.

Thirdly, I would really like it if you offered more courses; you should add bakery classes as well as Thai food classes.

Thank you for your efforts and support.

Looking forward to your response.

Your sincerly,

Hapz

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your enjoyment of the teaching style, provided details about your cooking practice since the course, and suggested new courses (bakery and Thai food). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a course director. To improve, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for example, when mentioning the 'signature dishes' or the 'opportunities in the food industry,' providing one specific detail would help demonstrate a more comprehensive response to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use transition signals like 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'Thirdly' to guide the reader through your points. While these are effective, they are somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices or link sentences more fluidly within paragraphs rather than relying solely on list-like transitions. The overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'signature dishes' and 'food industry field.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'explainedin details' (should be 'explained in detail') and 'celebrate fare-well' (should be 'celebrate the farewell'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice and better attention to collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I did a number of experiments... since the course' (should be 'have done'), 'explainedin' (spacing error), and 'Your sincerly' (spelling error). Additionally, 'the moment when we celebrate fare-well' should be 'the moment when we celebrated the farewell' to maintain consistent tense. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message.
