Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you've been well. Thankyou for considering me for the feedback about the course. I believe nowadays individuals who wants to learn skills which they can utilise in their free time is cookery course and i would highly recommend your school for that particular cookery course because it was so amazing to learn from the specialist who are so enthusiastic about cookery teaching. when i joined i was totally standing on scratch don't even know how to cook or manage spices for particular recipes but the teaching staff you have hired is like finding diamonds in the coal. they are amazing with their skills and the way they cultivate those ideas into your mind is very helpful.

I was practicing alot when i was enrolled in that course but now i am cooking thrice a week and you know what's the best part that i cook dinner for my family on every saturday where they all share their opinions about the food and also rate my skill before that course and after so it was pretty good experience with your school.

Overall i suggest every individual who is interested and willing to learn to master the cooking skill surely join your school.

Thankyou

have a nice day

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing what you enjoyed, stating how much you have cooked since the course, and suggesting a new course. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat informal and lacks the precision expected in a formal letter. For instance, while you mention the teachers are 'like finding diamonds in the coal', this idiom is slightly misused and does not clearly explain the specific aspects of the teaching style you enjoyed. To improve, ensure that each bullet point is developed with more specific, professional detail rather than relying on conversational filler.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is often disjointed. You rely heavily on run-on sentences and lack a variety of cohesive devices to link your thoughts logically. For example, the transition between your experience in the course and your current cooking habits is abrupt. Using more formal linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition' would help improve the progression of your ideas. Additionally, the paragraphing is inconsistent, as the second paragraph is quite long and covers multiple distinct points that could be better separated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band. You use some informal phrasing, such as 'you know what's the best part', which is inappropriate for a letter to a course director. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'standing on scratch' (likely meant 'starting from scratch') and 'cultivate those ideas into your mind'. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise, academic, or professional vocabulary and avoid colloquialisms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede readability. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('individuals who wants'), missing articles ('is cookery course'), and punctuation errors (run-on sentences and missing commas). You rely mostly on simple or compound structures, and your attempts at complex sentences often contain errors, such as 'I believe nowadays individuals who wants to learn skills which they can utilise in their free time is cookery course'. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve your accuracy.
