Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this to provide a valuable feedback on our recent cookery course.
Last week, I finished my cookery course from our school and I am very grateful to let you know that it was very helpful for me to enhance my cooking skills. Moreover, there are few things about the course that I really enjoyed. Firstly, cooking lessons were not only explicit but also practical based that contributed widely in my learning journey. Secondly, in one module we were assigned to cook a dish together as a team and that was very exciting.
Apart from that, I have done lots of cooking after that course. I cooked most of the Italian and Mexican cuisine and have invited my friends for dinner many times. For instance, my favorite dish is Mexican Burrito which I cook very often.
Nevertheless, I highly suggest you to introduce a new cooking course that will cover all different global cuisines and I would be delighted join that.
Yours faithfully,
Neel Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly describe what you enjoyed (the practical nature and team-based module), explain how much you have cooked since the course, and suggest a new course focused on global cuisines. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your experience and your suggestions. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail in your suggestions, perhaps explaining why a global cuisine course would be beneficial for the school's curriculum.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Apart from that' to guide the reader through your ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, ensure that the connection between sentences is more fluid, perhaps by varying the structure of your cohesive devices rather than relying heavily on sentence-initial connectors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enhance', 'practical based', and 'delighted'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'provide a valuable feedback' (should be 'provide valuable feedback') and 'practical based' (should be 'practical-based' or 'hands-on'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and articles. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms would further strengthen your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this to provide a valuable feedback' (unnecessary article), 'cooking lessons were not only explicit but also practical based' (awkward phrasing), and 'I would be delighted join that' (missing 'to'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as well as ensuring that complex structures are grammatically complete.
