Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide feedback on my recent learning experience at your cookery school.

To begin with, I joined 'Kitchen Queen' cooking classes last month to learn how to bake cakes and decorate the desserts. I completed this cookery course and was awarded a certificate of excellence after passing the test. What truly impressed me was that I got a chance to develop both my cooking skills and creativity. In addition, I genuinely enjoyed learning with Sapna madam, she made the learning engaging and more comfortable. She always encouraged me to try something new. Without any supervision, I recently made a delicious triple chocolate cake for my brother's birthday. Surprisingly, this home-made cake turned out to be rich, indulgent and fulfilling. Furthermore, I would suggest that if you could provide another more practical cooking lessons particularly for international cuisines to learn and gain more cooking experience.

I look forward to taking on more culinary experience from your cookery school.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Payal Bhakta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the writer vividly describes what was enjoyed about the course, specifically mentioning skill development, creativity, and the supportive teaching style of Sapna. Second, the amount of cooking done since the course is clearly detailed through the anecdote of making a triple chocolate cake for a brother's birthday. Third, a relevant suggestion for another course is made regarding international cuisines. The purpose of the letter is clearly conveyed throughout, and a consistent, polite tone is maintained. The content is fully developed and directly answers all aspects of the task instructions, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The response opens with a standard formal greeting and a clear statement of purpose. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the main body detailing the feedback and experiences, and the concluding remarks. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'Surprisingly' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing and substitution are generally well-managed, ensuring that the relationships between ideas remain clear throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey meaning with some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'certificate of excellence', 'creativity', 'triple chocolate cake', and 'rich, indulgent and fulfilling' demonstrate an adequate control of common and less common lexical items. There are occasional slight awkwardnesses in collocation or phrasing, such as 'take on more culinary experience' instead of 'gain more culinary experience' or 'practical cooking lessons' instead of 'practical cooking classes', but these minor errors do not impede communication. The vocabulary chosen successfully serves the communicative purpose of a formal feedback letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, showcasing control over clauses and conjunctions. Sentences such as 'What truly impressed me was that I got a chance to develop both my cooking skills and creativity' demonstrate effective use of complex forms. There are some minor grammatical slips, notably the sentence fragment 'Furthermore, I would suggest that if you could provide another more practical cooking lessons...' which contains a conditional clause that lacks a main clause completion. However, punctuation is generally sound, and the majority of sentences are clear and grammatically acceptable, allowing for smooth communication of ideas.
