Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing here to give you feedback related to this course and also suggest another cookery courses.

Although I was beginner to cooking. But when i come here and learn about many dishes, different tastes, chopping styles and so on. One of the major thing i enjoyed was trying to make new dishes such as italian, korean, indian. It was great experience for me. Another thing i enjoyed most was learning through experienced chefs. how they treat us, their behaviour, their mentorship. I was influenced by their knowledge.

In addition, I tried cooking new dishes everyday and always checked through chefs, friends, family member. whatever i learned in each class. when i return to my home i had always tried that dish in home. Therefore my skills improved day by day. I also gained so much information through this course. I am glad here to part of this course.

Consequently, I would like to you to suggest some other courses such as baking. I believe it will give you great feedback because you are experienced and your style of teaching is amazing. I believe you will consider it positively. I am very thankful to you.

Yours Faithfully,

Rajandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task prompt effectively. The candidate describes what she enjoyed about the course, specifically mentioning learning to make new dishes like Italian, Korean, and Indian cuisine, as well as the positive mentorship of the experienced chefs. She addresses the second bullet point by explaining how much cooking she has done since the course, noting that she tried cooking new dishes every day at home. Finally, she suggests another cookery course for the school to offer, proposing baking. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a course director. However, some ideas could be slightly more extended and polished to reach higher bands. Overall, the task is fully addressed with relevant, coherent ideas throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical paragraph structure that aligns with the bullet points of the task. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Although', 'In addition', 'Therefore', and 'Consequently', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or are used with minor grammatical awkwardness (e.g., starting sentences abruptly with conjunctions). Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, enjoyable aspects, cooking habits at home, and the course suggestion. Referencing is mostly clear, allowing the reader to follow the writer's personal narrative smoothly from start to finish, despite minor lapses in cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting some less common items such as 'mentorship', 'influenced', and 'experienced'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'I was beginner to cooking' instead of 'I was a beginner at cooking', and saying 'I would like to you to suggest' instead of 'I would like to suggest to you'. Spelling is generally accurate, but some phrasing feels repetitive or slightly unnatural. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, placing the response solidly in the band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. While there are some successful complex structures, such as 'Although I was beginner to cooking, But when i come here...', there are also frequent grammatical errors, including sentence fragments ('how they treat us, their behaviour, their mentorship'), tense inconsistencies ('when i come here and learn'), and missing articles ('a beginner'). Capitalization rules are also occasionally neglected (e.g., 'italian', 'korean', 'indian', 'i'). These errors occasionally cause slight difficulty or require re-reading, but they do not completely impede communication. Punctuation is basic and sometimes faulty.
