Overall Band Score: 7.5 · Cambridge IELTS 14 · 2026-09-16
IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter
- describe what you enjoyed about the course
- say how much cooking you've done since the course
- suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear sir,
I am writting this letter to provide my feedback about the cookery course that i have completed from your institute.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the course, particularly the practical sessions. The instructor was extremely knowledgeable and explained each recipe clearly, which made it easy for me to follow the instructions. I also appreciated the small class size, as it allowed everyone to receive individual guidance. Learning how to prepare different dishes and use kitchen equipment correctly was both enjoyable and useful.
Since completing the course, I have been cooking regularly at home. I have prepared several of the dishes we learned during the classes, and I now cook approximately three or four times a week. I have also started experimenting with different ingredients and modifying recipes according to my preferences. As a result, I feel much more confident in the kitchen.
I would also suggest offering an advanced baking course, focusing on cakes, pastries and bread-making. I believe this would be particularly appealing to students who have already completed a basic cookery course and would like to develop more specialised skills.
Thank you for providing such an enjoyable and informative learning experience. I look forward to attending another course in the future.
Yours faithfully,
Simranjit Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The candidate has fully and effectively addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. First, the student clearly describes what was enjoyed about the course, specifically highlighting the practical sessions, knowledgeable instructor, and small class size as seen in the phrase "the practical sessions. The instructor was extremely knowledgeable." Second, the frequency of cooking since completion is explicitly stated: "I now cook approximately three or four times a week." Finally, a relevant suggestion for another course is made by proposing "an advanced baking course, focusing on cakes, pastries and bread-making." The tone is appropriately polite and formal for a general training letter, and the purpose is sustained throughout. Ideas are well-supported and fully developed, aligning closely with the Band 8 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and natural progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, each dedicated to a distinct aspect of the prompt: opening and course enjoyment, subsequent cooking habits, and future course suggestions. Cohesive devices such as "Overall," "I also appreciated," "Since completing the course," and "As a result" are used flexibly and appropriately to connect ideas. Referencing is clear, and the paragraphing contributes to a smooth overall reading experience, reflecting the standards of Band 7.0 to 8.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The candidate demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision. Words and phrases such as "extremely knowledgeable," "individual guidance," "experimenting with different ingredients," and "specialised skills" indicate a strong lexical control suitable for the task. There are only occasional minor lapses, such as the lowercase letter in "i" in the opening paragraph. The vocabulary is natural and accurately conveys the intended meanings without straining the reader, successfully achieving a Band 7.0 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The student displays a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentence forms. Examples include relative clauses and participial phrases such as "which made it easy for me to follow the instructions" and "Learning how to prepare different dishes and use kitchen equipment correctly was both enjoyable and useful." There are frequent error-free sentences, and the grammar and punctuation are under good control. A minor mechanical error occurs in the first sentence with the lowercase 'i', but this is a slip rather than a systematic weakness. Overall, the grammatical performance comfortably meets the Band 7.5 criteria.
