Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this to you for feedback on my Indian cuisine cookery course which I completed last month.
I enjoyed each and every moment of classes in your academy but my favourite part was practicals because we can see recipes of various dishes performed by all students as well as practical was organized in quick learning manner.
After completion of my course I joined a hotel called JW Marriot which is located in Chandigarh. As a trainee, primarily I am preparing all the Indian cuisine only but now they are training me on Italian food as well.
I have a small request from your school to arrange few multi-national cuisines courses for the students and if you need an international chef I can talk with my staff members they have over 15 years experience in international cuisines and some of them are looking for part-time opportunities.
Yours faithfully,
Gourav Saini

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have covered all three bullet points required in the task prompt in a clear manner. You successfully described what you enjoyed about the course by mentioning that your favourite part was the practicals and how recipes were performed and organized. You also stated how much cooking you have done since completing the course, explaining that you joined the JW Marriot hotel in Chandigarh as a trainee and now prepare various cuisines. Finally, you successfully suggested another course by asking the school to arrange multi-national cuisine courses and even offered assistance with international chefs. Your ideas are relevant and appropriately developed for a General Training Task 1 letter. You have fulfilled all the communicative requirements of the prompt effectively, earning a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
Your letter maintains a logical flow and a clear structure overall, following the standard conventions of formal correspondence starting with 'Dear Sir or Madam,' and ending with your name. You organize your ideas into appropriate paragraphs, each addressing a different part of the prompt, such as your enjoyment, your current cooking work, and your suggestion for future courses. However, the cohesion within and between some sentences feels a bit mechanical or abrupt, particularly in sentences like 'After completion of my course I joined a hotel called JW Marriot which is located in Chandigarh.' Using a wider variety of cohesive devices and smoother transitional phrases would enhance the overall readability and elevate your organizational control to a higher level.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully utilizing topic-specific terms such as 'cookery course', 'Indian cuisine', 'practicals', 'trainee', and 'international chef'. You attempt some less common expressions, though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'practicals' as a noun plural for practical sessions and 'arrange few multi-national cuisines courses' instead of 'a few multinational cuisine courses'. Despite these minor lexical slips, your meaning remains clear throughout the letter, and the vocabulary you employ is sufficient to convey your ideas successfully without impeding communication for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You display a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout your letter. You successfully use relative clauses and compound-complex sentences, such as in 'As a trainee, primarily I am preparing all the Indian cuisine only but now they are training me on Italian food as well.' However, there are some noticeable grammatical errors and issues with punctuation and articles, including comma splices and missing articles like 'arrange few multi-national cuisines'. Run-on sentences without appropriate punctuation are also present, for instance in the section discussing your colleagues and their experience. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the grammar score from reaching the higher bands where error-free complex sentences predominate.
