Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student addresses all parts of the prompt, though the development of ideas is somewhat limited and constrained by language errors. Regarding the first bullet point, the writer describes what they enjoyed about the course, mentioning Professor Lee's experience and the helpful basics of food preparation. For the second point, they touch upon running a business and making a profit, implying post-course application, but they do not clearly state how much cooking they have done since finishing. For the third bullet point, the suggestion for another course is completely missing; the student discusses bakery investment instead of suggesting a specific new course the school should offer. Therefore, while the response attempts the prompt, key bullet points are missed or only partially fulfilled, aligning with a Band 5 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The letter lacks appropriate paragraphing and is essentially structured as one long, run-on sentence. Cohesive devices are used repeatedly and inaccurately, such as 'so much' and 'at the last', which creates a mechanical and confusing flow. The progression of ideas is hindered by a lack of clear sentence boundaries and punctuation, making it difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought. Pronoun referencing is also weak, as seen in phrases like 'that we does'nt know' and 'that was so helpfully'. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 4 to 5 range for cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on phrases like 'so much' and 'stuff'. There are noticeable word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'feeback', 'wounderful', 'cheif' instead of chief/chef, 'fiancial', 'helpfully', and 'earing' instead of earning. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary related to business and cooking, such as 'investing' and 'bakery', the numerous lexical inaccuracies and limited range restrict the score to a Band 4.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on long, convoluted run-on sentences joined by conjunctions like 'and' and 'so'. There is a complete lack of control over punctuation, with no proper full stops used to separate independent clauses in the main body. Frequent grammatical errors occur, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the professor help us'), incorrect verb tenses ('cookery course done from Your college was a awesome'), and faulty relative clauses ('students that was doing'). These persistent errors frequently cause strain for the reader.
