Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my gratitude for a cookery course that I have done at the institution. My time during school was really enjoyable because of head chef Henry. He is fun loving and nice guy who never hesitate to share his knowledge and skills. I learned mexican cuisine which helps me to get apromotion. After completion of course, I was promoted from server to head chef in Mexican restaurant.

I learned many things from the course such as how to improve the hygine and avoid food contaminations which is important because many disease could spread out if food is not taken care properly. School is equipped with all the facilities so I really enjoyed my time there.

I recently come to know that Indian cuisine is quite difficult but I would like to gain some hands on skills. If you can find any tutor then I would be happy to join class again.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. The writer successfully describes what they enjoyed about the course, mentioning the head chef Henry and the school facilities. They explain how much cooking they have done since the course by noting their promotion to head chef in a Mexican restaurant. Furthermore, they suggest another cookery course, specifically requesting an Indian cuisine class. However, some ideas lack full development, and the opening greeting contains a slight mismatch with the prompt's prescribed greeting. Overall, all core tasks are adequately addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and is divided into three logical paragraphs that correspond roughly to the bullet points in the prompt. Ideas generally flow from the enjoyment of the course to subsequent cooking practice, and finally to future suggestions. However, referencing and cohesive links are sometimes mechanical or missing, such as the abrupt transition between paragraphs. Paragraphing is adequate, but more precise cohesive devices would improve the flow and logical progression of the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a mix of common and some less common items such as 'gratitude', 'cuisine', and 'contamination'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'apromotion' instead of a promotion, 'hygine' instead of hygiene, and 'come to know' instead of came to know. These lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication but prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'He is fun loving and nice guy who never hesitate to share his knowledge...' and 'If you can find any tutor then I would be happy to join class again.' There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('a nice guy', 'the institution'), subject-verb agreement issues ('who never hesitate'), and tense inconsistencies ('that I have done' instead of that I did, 'I recently come to know' instead of I recently came to know). These errors occur frequently but rarely impede overall understanding.
