Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide feedback about the recent cookery course I participated in from 4th June to 16th June 2026.

I enrolled in the bakery class and what I enjoyed most about the course were the tutors. They gave detailed instructions on how to perform tasks, and they were very patient with me. I also loved the recommendations for the best ingredients to use to make tasty cakes and pastries.

The rate at which I bake has improved from before. Prior to the class, I made snacks for my children once in 2 months, but now, I do so at least twice a week. My love for baking has improved because I now have the adequate techniques and procedures.

It would be beneficial to both the school and I If a cookery course on vegetarian cuisines are established. I am exploring new ways of eating healthy and I would be glad if the school would offer the course in the near future.

I look forward to hearing from you sson.

Yours faithfully,

Oyinloluwa Akinsipe

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task instruction. You began by describing what you enjoyed about the course, specifically highlighting the patient tutors and their detailed instructions on ingredients, as seen in your sentence: "They gave detailed instructions on how to perform tasks, and they were very patient with me." You also clearly addressed how much cooking you have done since the course by providing a helpful comparison between your previous habits and your current baking routine ("Prior to the class, I made snacks for my children once in 2 months, but now, I do so at least twice a week"). Furthermore, you effectively suggested another cookery course for the school to offer, proposing vegetarian cuisines. All bullet points are fully and clearly developed, leading to a strong band score for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter is easy to follow, and the ideas are logically sequenced with a clear overall progression. You used appropriate paragraphing to separate your introduction, the positive aspects of the course, your frequency of cooking, your recommendation for a new course, and your sign-off. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, as demonstrated when you transition with phrases like "Prior to the class" and "It would be beneficial to both the school and I." However, there is a minor mechanical error in pronoun case in your final bullet point («both the school and I» should be «both the school and me»), but this does not disrupt the overall flow or clear organization of the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

Your vocabulary range is adequate and sufficient for this task, allowing you to convey your message with clarity and some precision. You successfully used less common expressions such as "adequate techniques and procedures" and "exploring new ways of eating healthy." There are a few minor lexical slips and infelicities, such as "The rate at which I bake has improved from before" (where "frequency of baking" might sound more natural) and the misspelling "sson" instead of "soon" at the end of the letter. Nevertheless, these minor errors do not impede communication, and your vocabulary effectively serves the communicative purpose of a semi-formal feedback letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrated a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout your response. For instance, you successfully constructed conditional and multi-clause sentences, such as "It would be beneficial to both the school and I If a cookery course on vegetarian cuisines are established." However, this particular sentence contains grammatical inaccuracies: "If ... are established" should be "if ... were established" or "is established" matching the plural/singular agreement with "a cookery course" (which is singular, so it should be "is established"), and "and I" should be objective "and me" after the preposition "to". Despite these occasional errors in agreement and case, your control of grammar is generally sound and punctuation is well handled, ensuring communication remains clear.
