Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir / Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to share my experience about the short cookery course in your institution.
There are lot of things that I enjoyed during this course. Firstly, group tasks, which helps and teach how to work in a team and we had lot of fun together to complete the task. Also, we have to find ingredients for the particular dish during that time; we always try to confuse others just for a fun.
Now, I am working at a resturant as a head cheaf. So, I am making lot more dishes every day. Also, I try to make different type of cusines as well. Which helps to boost my confidence and improve my cooking skills day by day.
I would like to suggest that it will help the younger people or people who are away from their home, if you provide online course on some basic knowlegde of cooking.
Thank you for helping me to achieve my dream in my life.
Best Regards,
Puneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, she describes what she enjoyed about the course, mentioning group tasks and finding ingredients, such as in "group tasks, which helps and teach how to work in a team." Second, she outlines how much cooking she has done since completing the course, explaining that she works as a head chef and prepares numerous dishes daily. Finally, she suggests another course, proposing online lessons on basic cooking knowledge for younger people or those living away from home. Although some ideas are slightly informal and brief, all parts of the task are adequately addressed, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a clear overall arrangement with an appropriate opening and closing salutation, and the paragraphs correspond to the different parts of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used, such as "Firstly," "Also," and "Now," though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is generally logical, with each main point given its own paragraph. However, the connection of ideas within sentences is occasionally awkward, such as in "during that time; we always try to confuse others just for a fun," which slightly disrupts the natural flow of the text. Overall, cohesion is sufficient for a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including topic-specific terms like "ingredients," "cusines," and "chef." However, there are several spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as "resturant" instead of restaurant, "cheaf" instead of chef, and "cusines" instead of cuisines. Furthermore, phrases like "just for a fun" contain unnatural articles. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, aligning with Band 6.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and issues with control. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ("group tasks, which helps and teach"), tense inconsistencies ("we have to find" instead of had to find), and punctuation errors with commas separating independent thoughts. While these errors occasionally cause strain or require re-reading, they do not completely obscure the meaning. The control of grammar aligns with a Band 5.5 performance.
