Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear sir,
I hope you are absolutely fantastic. I am beyond thirlled that I recently completed my cooking course in your school.
To be honest, I really did not know about cooking from basic level. firstly, i learnt how to make a omlet which is my favourite thing. At that time, I really enjoyed this momemt because I did not even know how to flip that thing. .
Furthermore, I learnt so many foriegn dishes such as chinese items, Itilians foods, and bakery foods as well. Moreover, chef taught me these once a time, then I catch all things in my mind very well. Instead of this, I made different types of professional items and some days ago, a competition which was orginazed by food community in my city, i participate in that and achieved Ist rank.
However, I want to take one suggestion for you should develop more cooking course and I will definitely participate in that because I want to become a professional chef . Secondly, you shouls organize cooking battle which will very beneficial for other students, All in all, I have brilliant experience with you.
Yours Sinceraly,
Mandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, you describe what you enjoyed about the course, specifically mentioning learning how to make an omelette and various foreign dishes like Chinese and Italian foods. Second, you mention how much cooking you have done since the course by noting that you participated in a local food community competition and achieved first rank. Finally, you suggest another course you would like the school to offer, proposing advanced cooking courses and a cooking battle. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter, and the purpose is clearly communicated throughout. All aspects of the task are addressed adequately, earning a solid Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. You use some cohesive devices to connect your thoughts, such as 'firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Secondly'. However, paragraphing is somewhat weak, with a large block of text in the middle that could be better separated to improve readability. Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise, as seen in phrases like 'Instead of this' where a different transitional phrase would be more appropriate. While the logical flow is maintained, the mechanical use of cohesive devices and sub-optimal paragraphing place this performance at Band 5.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, though it contains noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'thirlled' instead of thrilled, 'omlet' instead of omelette, 'foriegn' instead of foreign, and 'orginazed' instead of organised. You attempt some less common vocabulary items like 'professional items' and 'community', but inaccuracies occasionally impede communication or distract the reader. There is also repetition of basic descriptive words like 'things'. Because the range is limited and spelling errors are frequent, this criteria aligns best with Band 5.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the conditional-style clause 'if I did not even know how to flip that thing' and relative clauses like 'which is my favourite thing'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies ('chef taught me these once a time, then I catch all things'), missing prepositions, and punctuation slips. Sentences such as 'I want to take one suggestion for you should develop' contain structural confusion. These errors require some effort from the reader to interpret, supporting a Band 5.0 score.
