Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the task. The candidate describes what they enjoyed about the course, specifically mentioning learning new skills for cutting and chopping vegetables and making Chinese cuisine. They also mention how much cooking they have done since the course, contrasting their previous limited skills with their current knowledge of various dishes. Finally, a suggestion is made for another cookery course involving international competition. Although the greeting contains a slight error ('Dear Sir and Madam' instead of 'Sir or Madam') and the tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a course director, the ideas are somewhat limited and lack full extension. However, all parts of the prompt are addressed, fulfilling the criteria for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement, and the information is divided into paragraphs, though the paragraphing is somewhat basic and fragmented (for instance, single-sentence paragraphs like 'I was enrolled in this course last month'). Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes mechanically or awkwardly, such as 'Along with that i had learnt' and 'Before involving in this course'. Referencing is generally clear, and the letter follows a logical progression from introduction to enjoyment, subsequent cooking habits, and finally a suggestion for a future course. Progression is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions between very short paragraphs, placing this performance solidly at Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts to use less common items and topic-specific vocabulary such as 'mouthwatering dishes' and 'advanced cookery courses'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('choping' instead of chopping, 'causine' instead of cuisine, 'competitate' instead of compete) and word choice inaccuracies ('Before involving in this course'). While these errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score, they do not severely impede overall communication. The lexical range is minimally sufficient for a Band 5.5 or 6.0, but due to the cluster of spelling and collocation slips, a 5.5 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I hope this letter finds you in good health' and 'The things that I really enjoyed about the course were learning new skill...'. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several punctuation and capitalization errors, such as missing spaces after periods ('good health.I am'), lowercase 'i' used for the first-person pronoun in several places, and missing articles ('learning new skill', 'know i have'). Complex structures often contain errors. Because the grammatical errors are noticeable and recurrent, though communication is generally maintained, the performance fits the Band 5.5 descriptors.
