Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task prompt. First, the letter describes enjoyable aspects of the course, noting the experienced mentors and learning diverse recipes. Second, it mentions subsequent cooking activities by detailing various foods made at home. Third, it clearly suggests new courses for the school to offer, specifically mentioning Chinese and Irish cuisine. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the tone is appropriate for corresponding with a course director. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive in places, particularly regarding the list of dishes. Overall, all parts of the prompt are covered sufficiently, placing this performance securely at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement, and the reader can easily follow the sequence of ideas from enjoyment to subsequent cooking and finally to course suggestions. However, paragraphing is poorly handled, with almost the entire body of the letter compressed into one long, run-on paragraph. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, such as starting sentences abruptly with lowercase letters or relying on repetitive conjunctions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, for instance when shifting between personal experiences and future goals without clear transitional markers. While the message is understandable, the lack of effective paragraphing and basic mechanical cohesion prevent the response from achieving a higher score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate to a cookery course context, using terms such as 'mentors', 'cuisine', 'recipes', and 'baking'. There are, however, frequent lexical errors and odd collocations throughout the text. Examples include 'Iam formally written this letter to giving you a positive feedback', 'diiferent countries coisins', and 'broad the expendature of courses'. Spelling errors such as 'diiferent' and 'expendature' are noticeable. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning for the task. The range is sufficient for some precision, but persistent word-choice and spelling errors limit the score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but it is heavily marred by frequent grammatical and punctuation errors. There are persistent tense issues, such as 'Iam formally written' instead of 'I am formally writing', and 'because i will shifting to abroad'. Punctuation is weak, notably with lowercase letters starting sentences ('i had lot of enjoy', 'i also suggest') and missing apostrophes ('Your's faithfully'). Many sentences are run-ons joined by commas rather than proper conjunctions or full stops. Although the meaning remains mostly clear despite these frequent errors, the high density of basic grammatical slips keeps the performance at a Band 5.0.
