Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to give my feedback regarding a short cookery course that I recently attended at the Fandor School.

What I enjoyed the most about it was its friendly and supportive environment. A teacher demonstrated everything before allowing us to prepare any dish, and I loved the practical approach of this course.

I tend to prepare cuisines everyday at home including vegetable pasta and curries. Moreover, I also experiment with different spices and ingredients for making delecious dishes. I have prepared asian cuisines, such as potato breads, cholle bathure as well.

I would like to recommend a dessert course that should be included for future students as they are interested in preparing cakes and other sweets. They want to know how they can decorate cakes and present them effectively.

I feel grateful that you asked my opinion regarding the course. I hope that my suggestion will be taken into account.

Yours faithfully,

Prabh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You described what you enjoyed about the course by mentioning its friendly and supportive environment and the practical approach, as stated in sentences such as 'What I enjoyed the most about it was its friendly and supportive environment.' You also mentioned how much cooking you have done since the course by noting that you tend to prepare cuisines every day at home and experiment with spices. Finally, you successfully suggested another cookery course, recommending a dessert course for future students. All parts of the prompt are addressed appropriately with relevant ideas, demonstrating a clear understanding of the general task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter has a clear and logical progression from beginning to end. You used an appropriate formal greeting and sign-off, and your paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different ideas, such as your enjoyment of the course, your current cooking habits, and your suggestion for a new course. Cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'as well' are utilized adequately to connect your thoughts, although referencing could sometimes be smoother. Overall arrangement is coherent and the layout follows the conventions of formal letter-writing effectively.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary for this task with some flexibility and precision, using phrases like 'supportive environment', 'practical approach', and 'experiment with different spices'. There are, however, a few spelling errors, such as 'delecious' instead of 'delicious', 'everyday' instead of 'every day', and minor issues with word choice or collocation like 'prepare cuisines'. Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, such as 'A teacher demonstrated everything before allowing us to prepare any dish' and 'I hope that my suggestion will be taken into account.' There are a few grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'cuisines everyday at home' and 'dessert course that should be included for future students as they are interested in preparing cakes', where pronoun reference is slightly ambiguous. However, these errors are minor and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your letter easily.
