Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing to provide you with the information you requested regarding the cookery course.

I really enjoyed interacting with other people. The course was held in a charming location, and I was impressed by it. Moreover, the management team was very friendly. They demonstrated every step clearly to make the course easy for everyone.

I cook every day for my family, but I usually prepare the same dishes. I have not tried many new dishes. Therefore, I joined this course to learn something new so that I could cook different meals for my family at home. After joining the course, I have learned how to prepare dishes from different countries.

It would be helpful if the school offered a Chinese cooking course. My husband really likes Chinese food. Moreover, I have no idea how to cook it, so he always eats out. If the school provided a Chinese cooking course, I could learn how to prepare tasty Chinese dishes at home.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Mariya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a general training letter. You clearly describe what you enjoyed about the course, mentioning the charming location, the friendly management team, and the clear demonstrations. You also explain how much cooking you have done since the course by noting that you cook every day for your family and have learned to prepare international dishes. Finally, you successfully suggest another course by proposing a Chinese cooking course and explaining why it would be beneficial. While the ideas are relevant and well-communicated, some points, such as the description of what was enjoyed, could be extended further to reach a higher level of development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped into logical paragraphs, with an appropriate opening greeting and a formal sign-off. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as transitional words like 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'After joining the course', which help to connect your thoughts smoothly. Although referencing is generally clear and the overall arrangement is coherent, a slightly more flexible use of cohesive ties could enhance the flow further. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the reader can easily follow your message from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to convey your ideas with reasonable precision. You attempt some less common items and descriptive phrases, such as 'charming location', 'management team', and 'international dishes'. However, there are occasional limitations in word choice and phrasing, such as repeating simple structures like 'cookery course' and 'Chinese cooking course' rather than employing synonyms or more varied lexical expressions. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate and do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher band, a wider and more flexible vocabulary with greater stylistic control is needed.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writing features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating frequent error-free sentences. You effectively handle various structures, such as conditional ideas ('If the school provided a Chinese cooking course, I could learn...') and dependent clauses ('so that I could cook different meals'). Your control of grammar and punctuation is generally sound, with accurate verb tenses used to describe past experiences and current habits, such as 'I have not tried' and 'It would be helpful'. While a few minor errors persist, they do not impede communication and your overall grammatical accuracy supports clear understanding.
