Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my ecstatic experience in your cookery school. Particularly, I enrolled myself in bakery course as a beginner who loves to stock a belly with lots of bakery items, however was unfamiliar with its formation process. I am grateful to be mentored by experienced chefs of Canada. Additionally, I admired my time in the cookery school with other fellow learners.

The entire duration of this course was forty-five days. For half a month, I got theortical classes whcih was about closely taking into consideration the realtionship of sweet and acidity while baking, the temperature of oven, the various compositions elements. After that, for a straight complete month I baked almost every single day without any holiday. On a serious note, it was impeccable and marvellous.

For next winter vacations, I would like to explore about marine cusine and it would be matter of great appreciation, if you could please make arrangements for this course as well.

Thank you for enriching my baking skills to master level.

I hope you would consider my suggestion for marine cusine course.

Yours sincerely,

Jasleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, establishing an appropriate tone for a formal letter to a course director. The writer describes what was enjoyed about the course, such as being mentored by experienced chefs and interacting with fellow learners. The second bullet point regarding how much cooking has been done since the course is also addressed, detailing the forty-five-day duration and daily baking practice. Finally, a suggestion is made for another course involving marine cuisine. While all requirements are met, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the description of what was enjoyed could have been expanded with more specific baking details to reach fully extended levels. However, the purpose is clear and the overall communicative goal is achieved, reflecting a solid performance for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction, through the course details and personal reflections, to the final suggestion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the introduction, the course breakdown, and the future request. Cohesive devices are employed, including transitional phrases like 'Additionally' and 'After that', though some referencing and transitions feel a bit mechanical or simplistic. For example, the flow between the discussion of the theory classes and the practical baking month could be smoother. Nevertheless, the progression of information is clear throughout, and the letter is easy to follow from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting some less common and expressive items such as 'ecstatic experience', 'impeccable', and 'marvellous'. However, there are noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors that prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Examples include 'bakery course' instead of 'baking course', 'theortical' instead of 'theoretical', 'whcih' instead of 'which', 'realtionship' instead of 'relationship', 'compositions elements', and 'cusine' instead of 'cuisine'. Despite these inaccuracies, meaning is generally clear and communication is not impeded, demonstrating the typical characteristics expected at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There is good control over basic structures, but several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist. Examples include the unnatural pattern in 'express my ecstatic experience in your cookery school', an unnecessary article in 'in bakery course', and a missing preposition in 'explore about marine cusine' where 'explore marine cuisine' would be correct. Punctuation and verb tense consistency also show minor slips. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences remain accurate, placing the grammar performance firmly within this band.
