Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Director,

I am highly satisfied and delighted by joining your cookery school and I am urging numerous students from my college to attend your institute.

Cooking is an inevitable part of our life and I learned enormous cooking skills in your school, for instance, chopping, boiling, roasting and grilling. Except this, I have learned how to serve the food with proper care while maintaining the professionalism and appropriate hygiene.

Since the completion of my course, from last 6 weeks I am implementing all the skills in my workplace and I have impressed everyone with my skills. However, In the era of fast paced world, cooking and eating preferences are changing rapidly, therefore, a new trend of the barbeque has emerged and I would encourage you to include this course in your school, school will welcome plenty of new admissions.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks and regards,

Tarspreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully address all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You describe what you enjoyed about the course, such as learning chopping, boiling, roasting, and grilling, and mention how you learned to serve food with hygiene and care. You also mention how much cooking you have done since the course by explaining that you have been implementing these skills at your workplace for the last six weeks. Finally, you suggest another course by proposing a barbeque course due to changing preferences. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of what you enjoyed could be extended with more specific anecdotes from your lessons, and the suggestion for the new course is somewhat brief. To reach a higher level, you should expand on each point with greater detail and ensure all parts of the prompt are fully explored.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure from an introductory greeting through the main body paragraphs to a formal sign-off. You use basic cohesive devices to connect your ideas, such as 'therefore', 'however', and 'since the completion of my course'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'skills' across consecutive sentences in the second and third paragraphs. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, separating your introductory remarks, your experiences and cooking frequency, your suggestion, and your closing. To move towards a higher band, you need to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences is smoother and less predictable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'inevitable', 'professionalism', 'fast paced world', and 'preferences'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing throughout your response. For example, writing 'by joining your cookery school' instead of 'in joining', using 'enormous cooking skills' where 'extensive' or 'a wide variety of' would be more natural, and writing 'from last 6 weeks' instead of 'for the past 6 weeks'. There is also a minor spelling or phrasing slip in the final suggestion where punctuation or conjunctions are missing before 'school will welcome'. To achieve a higher score, you need to use less common lexical items with greater precision and avoid awkward word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures such as conditional and causative ideas like 'cooking and eating preferences are changing rapidly, therefore, a new trend... has emerged'. You manage several verb tenses, including the present simple, present continuous, and present perfect continuous ('I am implementing', 'have impressed'). However, there are some grammatical errors, such as a comma splice in the third paragraph ('However, In the era... rapidly, therefore...'), incorrect prepositions within grammatical patterns, and minor article omissions. These errors do not impede communication, and your meaning remains clear throughout. To attain a higher band, you must produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over punctuation and clause joining.
