Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to give feedback you asked for a short cookery course, which I did from your cookery school.
The best thing I enjoyed the most during this learning period is the sense of humor of the head chef. His jokes reduced our stress and helped us learn all the complex recipes efficiently
I have been cooking at a local restaurant in my town for three months, and I have cooked a lot of dishes during this time. I am the only chef here, as a result, I am always busy in preparing various dishes that I learned during my cookery course.
I would suggest that your management should introduce new courses like a baking course because it is very demanding nowadays. Furthermore, the head chef at your school is also famous for his baking skills, and I believe it will be a great opportunity for everyone to learn from him.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.
Yours faithfully,
Adam Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully addressed all parts of the task by describing what you enjoyed about the course, stating how much cooking you have done since, and suggesting another course. The response meets the requirements of the lower band by covering each bullet point, and shows a slight touch of the next band because your ideas are relevant and generally clear. However, some parts remain a little under-developed. For instance, when mentioning that you have been cooking at a local restaurant, expanding slightly more on specific dishes or experiences would have elevated the depth of the response. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a course director.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression from introduction to feedback, current cooking status, and future suggestions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main idea, showing strong command of basic structural organisation. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, such as 'Furthermore' and 'as a result', though referencing and transitions occasionally feel slightly mechanical rather than fully natural. To move closer to higher bands, you could employ a wider variety of more subtle cohesive links and ensure smoother transitions between sentences, such as connecting your enjoyment of the chef's humor more fluidly to the learning outcomes.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You used an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'efficiently', 'demanding', and 'complex recipes'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward phrasing, such as 'feedback you asked for a short cookery course' instead of 'the feedback you asked for regarding', and 'busy in preparing' instead of 'busy preparing'. However, these errors do not impede communication, and your spelling is accurate. To reach a higher standard, focus on precise collocations and more natural phrasing when expressing everyday professional and educational concepts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures reasonably well, as seen in 'which I did from your cookery school' and 'because it is very demanding nowadays'. There are some grammatical errors in punctuation and prepositions, such as the missing period at the end of your opening paragraph and minor prepositional awkwardness. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of your simple structures remain accurate. To achieve a higher level, incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentence patterns and polish your punctuation consistency throughout the letter.
