Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or madam,

I am writing to give you may feedback on the short cookery course I recently attended at your school.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course, especially the practical cooking sessions. The instructor was clear and supportive, and I learned how to prepare sevevral dishes in a simple and effective way. The friendly atomosphere also made the classes a great learning experience. Moreoever, the tips about using spices and kitchen equipment were particularly useful.

I have been cooking quite regularly. I usually prepare dinner for my family around four or five times a week. I have already tired several recipes that I learned during the course and my family has given me a thumbs-up for my cooking.

I would also suggest offering an advanced baking course in the future. I would be particularly interested in learning how to make cakes, pastries and different types of bread.

Thanku you for providing such an enjoyable and useful course. I look forward to attending another course in the future.

Yours faithfully,

Reena

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a professional and appropriate format. You clearly describe what you enjoyed about the course, such as the practical cooking sessions and the instructor's clear guidance. You also mention how much cooking you have done since finishing the course by noting that you prepare dinner for your family four or five times a week and have tried several new recipes. Finally, you successfully suggest another course by proposing an advanced baking course focused on cakes, pastries, and bread. Your ideas are relevant and well-supported, and the letter maintains a clear purpose throughout. To reach a higher level, you could extend your ideas further with more specific details, such as naming a particular dish you learned to prepare or describing the precise style of teaching you appreciated most.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with each body paragraph addressing a distinct bullet point from the prompt. You use cohesive devices effectively to connect your ideas, such as using 'Moreoever' and transition words to guide the reader smoothly from one topic to the next. The progression of thoughts from describing the enjoyment of the course, to your current cooking habits, to your suggestion for a future course is clear and easy to follow. To achieve an even higher band, you could ensure that referencing remains completely precise and employ a wider range of cohesive devices naturally without any slight mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general task of this nature, successfully communicating your ideas about food and cooking. Words and phrases like 'practical cooking sessions', 'regularly', and 'advanced baking course' are clear and appropriate. However, your vocabulary choice is sometimes limited, and there are a few noticeable spelling and word-form errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'may' instead of 'my', 'sevevral' instead of 'several', 'atomosphere' instead of 'atmosphere', 'Moreoever' instead of 'Moreover', 'tired' instead of 'tried', and 'Thanku' instead of 'Thank'. These slips show an attempt to use less common items with some awareness of style, but the spelling inaccuracies detract from precision. To improve, you should focus on proofreading your writing carefully to eliminate basic spelling slips and incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using structures such as relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'I learned how to prepare several dishes in a simple and effective way' and 'I would be particularly interested in learning how to make cakes...'). Your control of verb tenses is generally good, as seen in the accurate shift between the past simple for the course experience and the present perfect for your cooking habits since the course. There are some minor errors in punctuation and basic mechanics, but your grammar and punctuation errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing your message to be understood easily. To move further up, you need to incorporate an even wider variety of complex grammatical structures while maintaining error-free sentences.
