Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my satisfaction with cookery course, which I have completed at your school. My name is Himanshi Patel and my student ID is [redacted phone].
Firstly, I have enjoyed an environment over here, as all the teachers are kind and polite towards their students. Moreover, I am particularly impressed by the practical activities of the course. For instance, I have prepared almost all unique types of recipes by myself, which boosted my self-confidence.
During the course I have prepared over 100 types of dishes. Apart from that I also learned some foreign recipes such as Poutine, waffels and pancakes.
I would suggest that you introduce course specifically related to teach only healthy recipes. Nowadays, it is very essential to focus on our health as there are so many junk food options are available and so cases for obesity and diabetes are increasing everyday. Therefore, it is better to add this course to help people for learning healthy cuisines.
I thank you for your service. I really enjoyed the course.
Yours faithfully,
Himanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, but the level of development varies across the bullet points. For instance, the description of what was enjoyed is somewhat general, stating simply 'I have enjoyed an environment over here' and listing foreign recipes without much elaboration. The suggestion for a new course about healthy recipes is more detailed and relevant to current health concerns such as obesity and diabetes. However, the requirement regarding how much cooking has been done since the course is addressed somewhat weakly through a brief numerical mention ('prepared over 100 types of dishes') without providing a clearer picture of your ongoing cooking habits at home. To move higher, every bullet point needs to be equally well-extended and supported with clear details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable structure appropriate for a general correspondence, including standard opening and closing conventions. Paragraphs are used to separate different topics, such as the positive aspects of the course, subsequent cooking activity, and the course suggestion. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in its referencing and transitions, such as the frequent reliance on sequencers like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Apart from that'. Additionally, referencing within the text could be smoother to avoid slight abruptness between ideas, such as the transition into the course suggestion. Better control of cohesive devices and smoother logical progression would lift this criterion further.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, allowing you to successfully communicate your ideas about the cookery course and your suggestions. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, such as 'particularly impressed', 'self-confidence', and 'cuisines'. However, there are some noticeable lexical errors and spelling slips that slightly affect precision, such as 'cookery course' lacking a necessary article ('a cookery course'), 'waffels' (spelling error for 'waffles'), and 'teach only healthy recipes' where phrasing could be more natural. Word choice and collocations are generally understandable and do not impede communication, but eliminating minor errors and widening your lexical flexibility will help achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
There is a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms attempted throughout the letter, such as the use of subordinate clauses with 'as' and 'since'. You demonstrate control over basic structures and punctuation, and your meaning is generally clear despite some errors in grammar. For example, there are tense and aspect inconsistencies, such as 'which I have completed' instead of the simple past, and 'I have prepared almost all unique types' rather than 'prepared almost all unique types'. Furthermore, there are minor article and preposition issues, like 'introduce course specifically related to teach'. These errors occur occasionally but rarely impede communication, demonstrating a solid foundation in grammatical control.
