Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or madam,

I am a student of 1st year of your school writing to express my reviews about the cookery course that we had last month. Having this opportunity to learn new recipes was so exciting and interesting for all of us.

First of all, I enjoyed baking cup cakes with a unique style of adding cream cheese in between the cakes. Also I enjoyed the team building activities we had in this course. For instance we were divided into groups of 3 people per team and were given 30 minutes to prepare a different cuisine using the provided ingredients.

I believe this course has helped me develop a significant interest and confidence in me to try my own new recipes. Until now I have had made a variety of new cuisines and impressed my family in certain ways. I usually cook 3 times in a week now after learning this course.

I would like to suggest a new course that would hep us more such as adding a bakery course. We can learn more about baking cakes, cupcakes trying the new viral cakes that come from different parts of the world.

I am awaiting for your kind response and request you to review my suggestion.

Yours sincerely

Jyotsna

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you describe enjoying the cupcake activity and team challenge, explain that you now cook three times a week, and suggest a bakery course. The letter also maintains an appropriate purpose and gives relevant supporting detail, such as preparing a cuisine in teams with supplied ingredients. Your account of cooking since the course is clear, though “a variety of new cuisines” is quite general; one or two examples would make this point more fully developed. The proposed course is relevant, but you could explain more specifically what skills or topics it should cover. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear message, while a couple of ideas could be extended further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from its purpose, to what you enjoyed, to your cooking since the course, and finally to your suggestion. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and signposts such as “First of all,” “Also,” and “Until now” help the reader follow the points. The examples in the course paragraph are placed logically after the activities they illustrate. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and repeated use of “Also” and “course” makes the flow less flexible. The closing request is understandable but could connect more smoothly to the suggestion. Varying transitions and using clearer references between sentences would make the organisation feel more natural and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a feedback letter, including relevant expressions such as “team building activities,” “provided ingredients,” “develop a significant interest,” and “viral cakes.” These choices communicate your meaning, and the reader can understand your experiences and recommendation. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “express my reviews” would be more naturally phrased as “give my feedback,” while “new cuisines” does not quite fit the meaning of dishes or recipes. There are also spelling and form slips, including “hep” and “cup cakes.” Aim for more precise vocabulary for cooking activities and course content, and check spelling and natural word combinations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the opening participial phrase “Having this opportunity…” and the sentence explaining the team activity. Most of the message remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I have had made” combines incompatible verb forms; use “I have made.” In “confidence in me,” the pronoun pattern is incorrect, and “I am awaiting for” uses an unnecessary preposition. The sentence about trying recipes also needs clearer structure and punctuation. Review present perfect forms, prepositions after verbs, and pronoun patterns. More consistent control of these forms, alongside your existing sentence variety, would make the letter smoother and more accurate.
