Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding the feedback you asked for the cooking course you offered during the summer break. I am one of the students who was in the course.

To begin with, I really enjoyed being the part of it as it helped me in learning a lot about main course dishes served in Canada. However, the part of the classes that gravitated me the most was the demonstration periods. Although both practical and theoretical sessions were vital for the course's curriculum, the actual cooking time was more fascinating than reading about the species or recipes.

Since I am an Indian with little to no knowledge about Canadian food, with this course my understanding about foreign food improved alot. As a result, I cook everyday now. Additionally, my family also want to try new cuisine daily which makes cooking my regular job.

Given the circumstances, I want to ask you to please introduce another such course in the upcoming winter break so students like me, can utilize their time in learning a beneficial skill. Therefore, I was hoping if you could organise something with sweet dishes as the learning about main course cuisines is already done.

I hope to hear something from you soon!

Yours faithfully,

Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you explain that the demonstrations and practical cooking were enjoyable, describe cooking every day since the course, and request a winter course focused on sweet dishes. The letter also maintains an appropriate, polite purpose and gives relevant context about your limited familiarity with Canadian food. Your ideas are extended with reasons, such as your family wanting to try new cuisine. To make the response more fully developed, give a specific example of a dish or skill you learned and explain what kind of sweet-dish course you have in mind. The request is clear, though the phrase “another such course” is somewhat general before you specify the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from its purpose, to your experience during the course, to how you have used the learning, and finally to your suggestion. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “As a result,” and “Additionally” help connect the points. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly “Given the circumstances” and “Therefore,” which do not express the relationship between ideas as precisely as they could. The second paragraph also combines several ideas in a long sentence. Use simpler, more direct transitions and make the connection between your daily cooking and your request for a dessert course explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “demonstration periods,” “practical and theoretical sessions,” “curriculum,” and “cuisine.” These choices help convey your experience and suggestion, and the meaning remains clear throughout. However, some less common expressions are inaccurate or unnatural: “being the part of it,” “gravitate me,” and “learning about the species” do not communicate your intended meaning naturally. “Alot” is also a spelling error, and “foreign food” is less precise than the context allows. Aim for natural collocations and precise cooking-related vocabulary rather than choosing elaborate wording. For example, describe what “interested” you most and refer to “ingredients” or “recipes” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including subordinate clauses beginning with “Although” and “Since,” and most of the message is easy to follow. The sentence about practical and theoretical sessions shows an attempt to handle contrast, while the final request uses a polite conditional form. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “the part of the classes that gravitated me,” the relative clause is not formed naturally; “my family also want” has a subject–verb agreement issue; and “I was hoping if you could” uses an incorrect clause pattern. There are also article and punctuation problems, as in “being the part” and the comma in “students like me, can.” Review agreement, articles, and indirect request structures to make your varied sentences more consistently accurate.
