Overall Band Score: 6.5 · Cambridge IELTS 14 · 2026-10-17
IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter
- describe what you enjoyed about the course
- say how much cooking you've done since the course
- suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to share my feedback on the recent cookery course that I attended at your school. Overall, the course was beneficial, I seriously learned a lot of new skills and techniques. Additionally, I was really suprised to know how we can make new dishes with some common ingrediants.
Moreover, what I liked most about the course is the fusion concept. This really helped me to turn a boring regular food into a delicious meal. Since the completion of the course, every day I have tried new dishes using the techniques I have learned and believe me everyone really liked it alot.
I am interested in enrolling in more advance course at your school. I was wondering if your school offers Italian cookery courses? If so, I would like to discuss about this course.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Navdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you describe enjoying the course’s “fusion concept,” explain that you have tried new dishes every day since completing it, and ask about an Italian cookery course. The purpose and generally positive tone are clear. However, the final suggestion is less fully developed: “I am interested in enrolling in more advance course” is vague, and the question about Italian classes could explain what you hope to learn or why this course would interest you. The response also falls one word short of the required minimum, so it does not fully meet the task’s length instruction. Add a little detail about your cooking experience and the proposed course to make the feedback more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the purpose, describes the course, reports your cooking since then, and ends with a future-course request and a polite closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Moreover,” and “Since the completion” help connect ideas. The message is easy to follow throughout. To make the organisation more natural and less reliant on explicit transitions, vary how you link related points and develop the Italian-course request in its own paragraph. For example, connect your daily practice directly to the skills you would like to build next, rather than moving abruptly from your cooking experience to asking whether Italian courses are available.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a feedback letter, including “beneficial,” “techniques,” “fusion concept,” and “enrolling.” These choices communicate your enthusiasm and the course’s practical value. There are, however, some spelling errors, including “suprised” and “ingrediants,” and a few expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “more advance course” and “discuss about this course.” “Boring regular food” also sounds informal and unclear in this context. Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as describing familiar dishes as “everyday meals” and saying you would like to “enquire about” a course. This would make your vocabulary more precise and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including “I was wondering if your school offers Italian cookery courses?” and the sentence beginning “Since the completion of the course.” Most of the message remains clear, but some grammatical errors are present. In “Overall, the course was beneficial, I seriously learned…,” two independent clauses are joined with only a comma; use a full stop or a conjunction. “I am interested in enrolling in more advance course” needs an article and the correct adjective form, while “I would like to discuss about this course” uses an unnecessary preposition after “discuss.” Check sentence boundaries and article use, and revise these patterns while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
