IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter
- describe what you enjoyed about the course
- say how much cooking you've done since the course
- suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirit. I'm writing this letter in response of the feedback you asked for the cookery course I attended last week at the Leto Bakery, London.
First of all, I'm so glad that I took this course from your school. The whole course, from day one to day three, was designed to be fun and interactive learning. The thing I enjoyed the most about it was how easy you made the cooking look for the beginners like us.
You'll be happy to know that I managed to learn quite a lot in those three days. I've been cooking daily since then. All the dishes that I've cooked so far like Alfredo pasta, Biryani, Tiramisu to name a few, turned out delicious.
I'd like to make a suggestion; it would be great if you add a cookery course just for the chinese food. I love Chinese food and would love to learn from your school. Please keep up the good work.
Regards to all the school staff.
Yours Sincerely,
Hamna

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you describe the course as “fun and interactive,” explain that you have cooked daily since it ended, and request a course focused on Chinese food. The examples of Alfredo pasta, biryani and tiramisu make your follow-up cooking more concrete, and the letter’s purpose is clear throughout. To strengthen the response further, develop your feedback about the course with a specific example of a technique or activity you enjoyed, rather than relying mainly on the general point that cooking was made easy for beginners. You could also explain what you would hope to learn in the proposed Chinese cookery course. These additions would extend and support your ideas more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear, logical progression: you introduce your purpose, discuss the course, describe your cooking since then, and make a future-course suggestion. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, while phrases such as “First of all” and “You’ll be happy to know” guide the transitions. The sequence is easy to follow and the closing is appropriate. To make cohesion more flexible and polished, avoid relying on formulaic transitions and connect related ideas more naturally. For example, the list of dishes could be linked directly to the claim that you have cooked daily, and the suggestion for a Chinese course could include a brief reason or learning goal. This would make the progression feel more integrated.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant terms such as “interactive,” “beginners,” and “dishes.” The food examples also make the letter specific, and your meaning remains clear throughout. However, some expressions are imprecise or awkwardly collocated, including “in response of the feedback” and “take this course from your school.” The repeated use of “course” and “cooking” also limits variety, while “good health and spirit” sounds less natural in this context. Aim for more accurate, natural phrases such as “in response to your request for feedback” and “attend a course offered by your school.” Greater precision and variety would make your language more flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including “The thing I enjoyed the most about it was how easy you made the cooking look” and “I’d like to make a suggestion; it would be great if you add…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the present perfect in “I’ve been cooking daily since then” is appropriate for an activity continuing from the course. Some grammatical errors remain. In “in response of the feedback,” the preposition should be “to”; “for the beginners” would usually be “for beginners”; and after “it would be great if,” use “you added” or “you could add.” Review these patterns and punctuation around the semicolon to improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
