Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to give feedback regarding the cooking course which i completed at your school. It is proved to be very useful in my practical life. I enjoyed a lot during this whole learning process. First and foremost friendly environment of class encouraged me to ask about anything easily. I enjoyed to learn cooking and decoration of dishes in variety of ways.

Additionally, I have learnt so many skills in class. Now I am confident about my cooking so I have tried a lot of recipies at home. I can cook briyani, mutton qorma and white chicken very easily as i have done enough practice of these dishes in class.

Nowadays people preferences are changing and they like to eat the italian food. My family also prefer to eat italian dishes some time.I would like to suggest you to offer another course for cooking of some italian dishes.

I hope you will look into my suggestion.

Yours sincerely,

X.Y.Z.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you describe the friendly classroom and learning dish decoration, explain that you have cooked several dishes at home, and suggest an Italian cookery course. The examples of biryani, qorma and chicken make your account more specific, and the letter’s purpose is clear. However, the enjoyment point is developed more fully than the amount of cooking you have done since the course: “a lot of recipes” is not very precise, and you could explain how often you cook or give a clearer sense of how much practice you have had. The Italian-course suggestion is relevant but could also be supported with a specific reason or examples of dishes. This covers the task well overall, with some ideas needing further development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: it opens with its purpose, moves from your experience of the course to cooking at home, and ends with a suggestion and polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, while “Additionally” and “I would like to suggest” guide the reader through the message. The sequence is easy to follow, and the ideas are generally connected. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly “First and foremost” and “Additionally,” where simpler transitions or more direct connections would sound more natural. The shift from your family’s food preferences to the proposed course could also be made smoother by explaining how those preferences led to your suggestion. Overall, the organisation is clear and progression is maintained.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the course feedback and your cooking experience, including “friendly environment,” “decoration of dishes,” and “confident about my cooking.” The named dishes also make the message concrete. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “It is proved to be very useful,” “enjoyed a lot during this whole learning process,” and “people preferences are changing.” Spelling errors in “recipies” and “briyani” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the language. Aim to learn common collocations for giving feedback and describing cooking, and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including the reason clause in “I can cook … very easily as I have done enough practice.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the letter includes a range of past and present forms. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “First and foremost friendly environment of class” needs articles, and “My family also prefer” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “Nowadays” also needs clearer sentence boundaries, while “I enjoyed to learn” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Review articles, agreement, punctuation and verb patterns, then proofread for consistent capitalisation of “I.” These corrections would improve accuracy without changing your clear message.
