Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Director,

I am writing to you about my cookery course.

Firstly, I feel enjoyed during cookery course. My friends also with me. I learn more cooking to different dishes. I can cook all dishes easily. Like biryani, chicken karahi, another dishes.I make a good chef. When I participate in competition. I get first position then I get prize because I make a impressive and delicious meal.

Secondly, I have more experience about cooking. This is very interesting course. I have done this course 3 month ago. My cookery school also experts in cooking. I also make meal at home.

Finally, I suggest that, cookery school should give offer to other people. Special village people because they can't pay fee for cookery course. When you give facilities about cookery course then people get easily this course. It is useful for other people especially for women category. So you should take free course.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You include material related to all three requested points: you mention enjoying the course, describe cooking at home and taking part in a competition, and make a suggestion about future courses. However, the main suggestion does not answer the prompt directly: you ask the school to offer free courses for village residents and women, rather than naming another type of cookery course you would like it to offer. Your enjoyment is also only briefly explained, and it is unclear what you learned or particularly valued. Develop these points with specific details—for example, a dish or skill you enjoyed learning, how often you have cooked since the course, and a course topic such as baking or vegetarian cooking. The purpose is understandable, but some ideas remain limited or unclear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable sequence, with “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Finally” introducing the main points, and the reader can generally follow the shift from course experience to cooking afterwards and a suggestion. However, this organisation feels mechanical, and the ideas within paragraphs do not always progress clearly. For instance, the first section moves from friends and dishes to being a chef and winning a competition without explaining how these details connect. The final section repeats the idea of offering a course and providing facilities. Use separate, focused paragraphs for each task point, and connect examples to the main idea with clearer references. A suitable closing and the requested opening would also make the letter’s structure more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a basic range of topic vocabulary, including “cookery course,” “dishes,” “competition,” “prize,” and “delicious meal,” so the subject is usually clear. However, vocabulary is repetitive and several word choices or combinations are unnatural, which sometimes makes the intended meaning difficult to follow. For example, “I feel enjoyed” does not express enjoyment naturally, while “I make a good chef” and “give facilities about cookery course” are unclear in this context. “Other dishes” would be more natural than “another dishes,” and “take a free course” does not clearly convey your suggestion to the school. Build a wider set of accurate phrases for describing skills, course content, and future course topics, and check that each phrase expresses the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

Most sentences use simple patterns, and you attempt some longer structures, such as “When you give facilities about cookery course then people get easily this course.” However, these attempts are often faulty, and frequent errors in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction can make the message difficult to understand. Examples include “I learn more cooking,” “I have done this course 3 month ago,” and the fragment “When I participate in competition.” The sentence “Like biryani, chicken karahi, another dishes” is also incomplete. Practise forming complete sentences and keeping past events in the past tense; for example, describe what you learned and what you cooked after the course using clear subject–verb structures. More accurate simple sentences should come before adding complex ones.
