Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my satisfaction and happiness I received after doing the Indian cookery course at your school. It was short, productive and educational.

The course offered me practical lessons after every teaching session which I enjoyed doing. During course, we students were told to make group of 3 people and prepare a surprise dish using course material which was fun to do.

Since I finished the course I am doing cooking every single day because it gives me the pleasure to cook food at home as it is healthy and free of extra spices and sauces. Moreover, it saves my money which I used to spend before for eating outside.

It would be great if school can offer another course of Chinese food. I will be more than happy to enroll for that too because I love chinese and whenever i want to break the monotonous routine of eating Indian, Ican cook chinese at home but in a healthy version.

Thank you for your great service at my previous course and I hope you like my suggestion to add Chinese classes.

Yours sincerely,

Preet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, positive purpose. You explain what you enjoyed through the practical lessons and group activity, describe cooking at home every day since the course, and suggest Chinese cookery classes with a reason for your interest. These details make the response relevant and give the director a clear picture of your experience. The course feedback is especially specific, while the suggestion is supported by your wish to vary meals and cook a healthier version at home. To strengthen the response further, develop the course evaluation slightly—for example, explain what you learned from preparing the surprise dish or how the practical format improved your skills. The closing also expresses appreciation appropriately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is arranged in a clear sequence: course experience, cooking since completion, a future course suggestion, and a polite closing. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow each part of the task, and links such as “Since I finished the course” and “Moreover” make relationships between ideas clear. The letter format is appropriate and the purpose is easy to understand throughout. Some connections are less smooth where several ideas are packed into one sentence, particularly the final paragraph about Chinese food and breaking a monotonous routine. Consider dividing that explanation into shorter sentences and using punctuation to clarify the progression. Overall, the organisation is logical, though cohesion could be more consistently controlled at sentence level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “practical lessons,” “productive,” “monotonous routine,” and “enroll.” These choices communicate your experience and preferences clearly, and the reader can understand the intended meaning throughout. There are, however, some awkward word combinations and imprecise expressions, such as “satisfaction and happiness I received” and “doing cooking every single day.” “Course material” is also less precise than a phrase describing the recipes or techniques taught. Spelling and capitalisation need attention in “chinese” and “i.” Aim for more natural collocations and consistent formal style; this would make the letter sound more fluent and precise without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a time clause beginning “Since I finished the course.” Most sentences communicate their meaning successfully, and the overall message remains clear. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “During course” needs an article, and “make group of 3 people” needs a plural noun and article. In “I am doing cooking every single day,” the verb construction is not natural for this meaning; “I cook every day” is more accurate. The long sentence beginning “I will be more than happy” also needs clearer punctuation, and “Ican” requires a space. Review articles, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
